Teacher training

Action 7 of the School Food Plan sets out the National College for Teaching and Leadership’s (NCTL) commitment to include food and nutrition in their head teacher training programme. NCTL sets standards for head teacher training, and in order to foster a good food culture within schools, head teachers themselves need to be well-informed about nutrition, diet and cooking.

NCTL has now completed this action, producing content on food across several of its compulsory core curriculum modules. You can view the materials below.

But whilst the support of the head is vital, we recognise that all teachers have a role to play in fostering a great whole-school food culture. Only by ensuring that teachers understand the importance of good food, good food education and the wider impacts on overall health and well-being, will they feel empowered to access the brilliant range of organisations available to help. So we’re working with groups from across the teaching, training and academic spheres, to identify what additional provisions may be required to support teachers at all stages of their career development.
