Kick-start increased take-up of good school food

The introduction of universal infant free school meals in England

In September 2013, the Government announced that every single child in the first 3 years of school, in England, would be eligible for a free school lunch. Universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) were launched in September 2014. To help schools increase the take-up of school meals and support the implementation of UIFSM, the Department for Education (DfE) awarded contracts worth over £14m to organisations to work directly with schools. The January 2015 School Census showed that over 85% of infant pupils were taking up a hot, tasty, nutritious meal.
